Why Isn't the Air Conditioner's Cooling Mode Working?

Is your air conditioner switching to Cool mode but not cooling the room? The problem may be related to the remote control settings, dirty filters, low refrigerant, the compressor, or the electronic control system. Learn the most common causes.

Why Isn't the Air Conditioner's Cooling Mode Working?

One of the most common complaints during the summer is: "I set my air conditioner to cooling mode, but the room doesn't get cool." Many people immediately assume that the refrigerant has run out. However, there are several reasons why the Cool mode may not work properly, and some of them can be checked before calling a technician.

First, make sure the remote control is set to the correct operating mode. Sometimes the air conditioner is accidentally switched to Fan, Dry, or Auto mode. For cooling, the snowflake (Cool) icon should be displayed, and the temperature should generally be set between 22–24°C. If the selected temperature is higher than the room temperature, the compressor may not start.

Another common cause is dirty indoor unit filters. When the filters become clogged with dust, airflow is restricted, and the air conditioner cannot deliver enough cold air. Cleaning the filters regularly not only improves cooling performance but also reduces energy consumption.

One of the most common faults is low refrigerant. Under normal operating conditions, refrigerant is not consumed, but its level may decrease over time due to small leaks at the pipe connections. When the refrigerant level is low, the air conditioner continues to operate but cannot cool the room effectively. Ice forming on the thin pipe leading to the outdoor unit or the compressor frequently stopping and restarting may indicate this problem.

A dirty outdoor unit can also significantly reduce cooling performance. When dust, leaves, and other debris accumulate on the condenser, heat cannot be released efficiently. As a result, the air conditioner loses efficiency and cannot cool the room properly, even in Cool mode. It is recommended to have the outdoor unit professionally cleaned at least once a year.

A faulty compressor may also prevent the cooling mode from working. The compressor is the heart of the cooling system. If it fails, the air conditioner may continue running only as a fan. The indoor unit blows air, but the air is no longer cold. In such cases, a professional inspection is necessary.

In some cases, the problem lies with the temperature sensor or the electronic control board. If the sensor sends incorrect readings, the air conditioner may misjudge the room temperature and switch the compressor off too early. If the control board is faulty, the unit may fail to manage its operating modes correctly, preventing Cool mode from functioning.

Low or unstable electrical voltage can also affect cooling performance. When the voltage drops below the required level, the compressor may struggle to start or may not operate at all. For this reason, it is also important to inspect the electrical circuit and the circuit breaker supplying power to the air conditioner.

Pay attention to these warning signs: if the air conditioner blows only warm or slightly cool air, ice forms on the pipes, unusual noises are heard, a burning smell is present, or the circuit breaker trips frequently, stop using the unit immediately. Continuing to operate it may turn a minor issue into a more serious and expensive repair.

If your air conditioner's cooling mode is not working, you can contact a professional air conditioner technician through Ustamvar.az. The technician will inspect the unit on-site, identify the cause of the problem, and explain the required repairs and the estimated cost before any work begins.
