People who call us about a noisy washing machine describe the problem in wonderfully vivid ways: "it howls like a plane", "like there's a rock spinning inside", "the whole kitchen shakes on spin". It sounds funny, but those descriptions genuinely help the technician — every sound has its own cause, and some are harmless while others need urgent attention.
If the machine is new and has been shaking since day one, the transit bolts probably were never removed. These bolts lock the drum in place for transport and must come out before installation. Believe us, we've seen machines run for months with the bolts still in — the owners just put up with it, assuming "that's how this model is". Removing the three or four large bolts on the back panel is all it takes.
The second popular cause is even simpler: things left in pockets. A coin, a key or a hairpin first slips under the drum gasket, then finds its way into the pump filter. If you hear jingling or scraping during a wash, first run your hand around the rubber door gasket, then open and clean the filter in the bottom right corner. Opening that filter every six months is a good habit anyway.
Now for the serious part. A dull rumble that grows louder on spin, plus play you can feel when you rock the drum by hand — these are the classic signs of worn bearings. Don't ignore this sound: once a bearing fully collapses, the drum shaft gets damaged and the repair can reach half the price of a new machine. Caught early, it costs far less.
If the machine walks or jumps during spin, the cause is usually tired shock absorbers or simply poor levelling. Check the easy thing first: all four feet should press firmly on the floor and the machine shouldn't rock when you push it. If it's level and still jumping, the shock absorbers need replacing — a much easier and cheaper job than bearings.
Keep one rule in mind: mechanical noises never fix themselves — they only get worse. What's merely an annoying squeak today is a bearing replacement in three months and a damaged drum in six. So when you hear a strange sound, at the very least have its cause identified.
